Akothee has been in the eye of the storm these past few days after pictures of her gyrating on stage went viral.
The backlash has been tremendous with Kenya Films Classification Board (KFCB) chairman Ezekiel Mutua leading the charge. He had written on his Facebook page that:
Kenya has got talent but as long as we keep celebrating this kind of madness, our entertainment industry will never grow. Akothee is talented but the filthy and stupid stunts she has to pull to remain relevant should concern all of us. What’s worse is to see grown-up men and women celebrating this scatological obscenity in the name of entertainment. We have lost it as a nation.
Many Kenyans have come out to defend Akothee and Classic FM’s Maina Kageni was one of them. He spoke on his popular television morning show saying:
She has made it very clear that she is not a role model for anyone. She just does Akothee, so let her be. You don’t like her stuff or her brand, don’t follow her.
Why do Kenyans hate so much? We are moral police on everything, yet in the cupboard, we have so many skeletons.
Maina was upset about the affair and went on to say:
This morning and if Akothee you are listening, I have some advice for you…The level of hate I saw on Akothee was ridiculous. Beyonce has done even worse than that. Have we even raised a voice? No. Let Akothee be. She’s got her own brand. She does her own thing.
He then told the singer to remember that her goal wasn’t to get rid of the haters but to work on the reactions she has to negativity.
Maina is no stranger to Ezekiel Mutua’s censure, as the KFCB board chairman criticised the host for his s3xually provocative morning show. He even said that he would, “walk to the studio with police and have the said Bi Msafari, Maina & Kingangi arrested if they defy these guidelines.”
