Deputy President William Ruto visited the family of Captain Mario Magonga, his pilot who died in a crash in Turkana on March 4.
Magonga and 4 Americans died in the crash.
Ruto eulogised Magonga as an accomplished, disciplined and reliable pilot, who loved his job. “He was friendly, humble and given to banter. Captain Magonga was charitable, intelligent and had impeccable credentials. He will be sorely missed.”
Captain Magonga, an ex-military pilot, hailed from Nyamataro, Kitutu Chache South, Kisii county.
He is a first cousin to area MP Richard Onyonka.
Turkana County Deputy Commissioner Alexander Motivo said, “The tourists were set to travel on Monday to Central Island that is about 75 km from the showers of Lake Turkana but one plane went missing and it didn’t land at Lobolo.”
Two helicopters had landed earlier at Labolo tented Camp on the National Park’s Island, however one managed to clear the area safely.
Adan Mohammed Alio, KWS Western Conservation Area Assistant Director in charge of operations said the tourists had hired two choppers to take them to Lake Turkana.
