Police have charged a Tennessee mother with murder and other counts saying her drug use during pregnancy led to the deaths of her newborn twins.
Tiffany Marie Roberts, 29, is said to have been using drugs during her pregnancy, a Chattanooga police affidavit states.
She was even under the influence on July 20, when she experienced shortness of breath and went to the TC Thompson Children’s Hospital where doctors performed an emergency delivery.
The complaint says Roberts tested positive for illegal drugs during her pregnancy and medical staff told police both infants tested positive for several narcotics – including cocaine – when they were born Sunday, the Tennessean reports.
Roberts had ecstasy in her system when she gave birth to the babies. Throughout her pregnancy, the woman tested positively for cocaine, oxycodone, roxicodone, methamphetamine and benzodiazepine.
Both infants died Tuesday. They were born at just 23 weeks.
Police say Roberts is charged with murder, aggravated child abuse or neglect and viable fetus as a victim. They were called to the scene on Tuesday to investigate the babies’ death.
‘Based on Ms. Roberts’ illicit drug use during her pregnancy, in conjunction with the medical records, the infants were subject to aggravated child abuse and neglect which later led to their deaths,’ an officer’s affidavit stated.
Roberts was arrested on Tuesday.
She is currently being held on $1million bond at the Hamilton County jail.
It wasn’t immediately clear if Roberts has an attorney.
