sauti sol members are singing in french in their new collabo and we love it video - Sauti Sol members are singing in French in their new collabo and we love it (Video)

Sauti Sol

Sauti Sol members are belting their hearts out in French, Lingala and Kinyarwanda in the latest collabo and trust me, they have never sounded better than this. The boy band teamed up with Rwandan Afro-beat star Mani Martin for the love ballad dubbed Mapenzi and I love it. You’ll probably love it too. Listening to Bien, Mudigi and Chimano singing in foreign languages was quite something. It’s almost as if you are listening to a new person. Just like the first time we heard Yemi Alade singing in Swahili. Interestingly, Sauti Sol didn’t even plan to sing in Kinyarwanda, French and Lingala. They had been working on the song with Mani for a year or so. By the time they went to record it, Sauti Sol suggested that they switch parts with the 30-year-old Rwandan singer. They did and it turned out to be a great idea.  The result was so good so much so that they decided to leave it like that. However, Mani admits that he struggled to sing in English and Swahili. The song was produced Rwandan producer Jacques Kikene Mastola, Sauti Sol’s Fancy Fingers and Pastor P. The video was filmed in Rwanda by music video director Meddy Saleh. Watch Mapenzi below and tell us what you think.

kenyans are to blame for not giving local musicians enough support - Kenyans are to blame for not giving local musicians enough support

Local music rarely transcends borders and to be honest, it’s partly our fault as Kenyans. We don’t appreciate our artists enough. Maybe things would be different if we did, who knows? Artists from Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and other African countries have been making headways in the international music scene because of the support that they enjoy from their country mates. This support motivates them to set bigger goals and pursue them. Perhaps this explains why their music industries are way ahead of Kenya and from the look of things it will take us time to catch up. You could argue that local musicians are not doing enough and that they are not making music which can be played outside Kenya. That notion is wrong and the complete opposite of what is really happening. If you are keen enough, you’ll notice that the likes of Sauti Sol, Khaligraph, King Kaka, MDQ, Victoria Kimani, Octopizzo, Stella Mwangi, Blinky Bill, have been working hard to show the world that Kenya has so much to offer. However, their efforts neither here nor there because we don’t support or encourage them. It’s almost as if they are making music for the sake of it. This should not be the case. At any given point in time, the biggest song in Kenya is always from Tanzania, Nigeria or some other African country. It’s rarely our own music. We are consuming foreign music at the expense of local music and this is wrong. If you look at the biggest Kenyan concerts the last few years, you’ll realize that the main performer was either an international act or from Nigeria, Tanzania and the likes. Why is this so? By giving local artists a chance to be the headline acts of such big concerts, we’ll show them…

sobriety in music writingkenyan vs tanzanian music - Sobriety in Music Writing:Kenyan Vs Tanzanian Music

This year has had its fair share of Drama in the entertainment Industry majorly Music. It started with the play Kenyan Music  hashtag. This sparking a conversation for several weeks both on social and mainstream media. But where do  some of our artists go wrong? Essentially there is good music, but not enough has been done to better the Kenyan Music. Kenyan Artists and Writing.. Do Kenyan artists  ever ask yourselves why some of the music ain’t playing on mainstream media? Understanding music as an art and not just a way to fame are two different approaches. As a musician, one has to embrace the fact that dedication to writing is key. Many of  the Kenyan artists get lots of backlash because of  the songs lyrics. The biggest bunch of artists are this that use direct vulgarity to do music and their lyrics depict nothing less than ‘we need help in writing”. Good examples of these artists are the likes of  Ethic, Ochunglo family,Rico gang among many others. The latest song by Ethic that was able to amass over 1million views has lyrics that in my opinion  are too sexual, ‘Si hupandana, panda panda Si hupandana, katangaze basi baby Si hupandana, panda panda  Si hupandana eeh”“Tunabakana, hapo nyuma na sidika  Mnafanana, maana kila day bana  Unaitangaza, katangaze basi baby” This does not mean that there are no music writers its just that not many embrace them. Such writers include, newly signed under Sol Generation, Bensoul,’Bazokizo’ hit maker Collo,Bien Barasa of Sauti sol, ‘Lingala ya Yesu’ singer Pitson is also a celebrated writer just to mention a few. Well, these names depict that the Kenyan Music scene would do so well with such talents in writing more music for artists. Content creation… On the other hand Tanzanian artists have embraced song writers that bring a poetic approach…
